PCTel files patent infringement lawsuits against 4 companies

PCTel Inc. has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Lucent Technologies Inc., Agere Systems Inc., Broadcom Corp. and Robotics Corp.

PCTel, which supplies 802.11 software, software-defined products and Internet access technology gear, also filed a complaint against 3Com Corp. in March this year.

“We enter litigation reluctantly, but with an absolute conviction that our claims are justified and that we are entitled to substantial compensation,” said Marty Singer, PCTel chairman and chief executive officer. “As has been our practice, we attempted to resolve these matters without recourse to the courts. However, experience has convinced us that litigation offers the most effective path to a meaningful resolution.”

The complaints, which claim that the accused companies infringed modem technology PCTel developed or acquired, were filed May 23 in the Northern District of California.

PCTel won a motion recently against 3Com to transfer the lawsuit to California’s Northern District.

PCTel recently entered a $19 million agreement to allow Conexant to license its HSP modem product line, which lies at the core of the lawsuits.

“In addition to cash consideration, Conexant granted PCTel ownership of approximately 50 modem-related patents,” said PCTel.

PCTel also acquired Dynamic Telecommunications Inc.

PCTel’s Segue license product has been adopted by Boingo for 2.5-generation cellular data networks and Maritime Telecommunication Networks for Wi-Fi networks aboard cruise ships.
