Jabber introduces products in wireless push

DENVER-Instant messaging technology provider Jabber Inc. said it will introduce a range of products and services aimed at the wireless industry, including a gateway the company said will allow mobile-phone users to send IM messages to desktop computer users.

Separately, Jabber said it extended its resale agreement with technology giant Hewlett-Packard Co. to include the company’s technology on Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2003 Enterprise Servers and HP’s UX platforms. HP will also sell Jabber on these platforms, as well as its existing Linux-based platform to its customer base beginning in the second quarter of this year.

Jabber’s software has been sold and deployed to more than 3 million users, and the company counts France Telecom, Earthlink, Hewlett-Packard, BellSouth, WebMethods, AT&T, Landmark Graphics, and Juniper Networks as customers.

Under the company’s wireless push, Jabber will sell its short message service gateway starting in the third quarter of this year. The company said other new wireless products, such as HTTP and Wireless Village client gateways and new clients for mobile devices, will be offered later in the year in response to demand from enterprises and mobile operators. The company said it is also planning service extensions that will help wireless and wireline users locate, communicate and share digital content with one another.
