RESTON, Va.-Expanding the usability of its handset offering, Nextel Communications Inc. reported a deal with handset manufacturer Motorola Inc. and Symbol Technologies Inc. to provide a bar code scanner attachment for select Nextel handsets, including the i88s and i58sr.
The companies said Symbol’s one-ounce PSM20I bar code scanner attachment will work in conjunction with Nextel’s iDEN-based data service to provide field sales and service personnel with access to and transmission of information at their point of activities, reduce data entry errors and enable integrated applications for specific industry or business uses.
The scanner attachment is expected to sell for $250.
Nextel and Motorola also announced several location-based services based on Motorola’s global positioning system-enabled iDEN handset, including voice-enabled driving directions and asset tracking solutions. The companies said they are working with numerous developers to deploy applications on the handsets.
