SAN DIEGO-Text messaging is growing on a worldwide basis, according to recent polls conducted by SMS.ac Inc., which provides a wireless community (www.sms.ac) that allows for interaction among network operators, technology standards, the Internet, businesses, consumers, and application and content developers. Results of the polls show that SMS use is rapidly increasing among the group’s 10 million members.
According to one poll, 71.7 percent of 56,764 respondents said they are sending more SMS messages than they were three months ago. In another survey, 56.6 percent of 46,184 respondents said they send 10 or more text messages per day, up from 47.2 percent in January. In another poll, 80.1 percent of 39,514 respondents said they receive more text messages than voice calls, while 12 percent receive more voice calls and 7.9 percent receive an equal amount of each.
“There is no question that adoption of wireless data communications is exploding in a global phenomenon,” said Michael Pousti, chairman and chief executive officer of SMS.ac. “The world’s consumers are looking to the wireless industry for applications that provide anywhere, anyplace connectivity to the people, information and entertainment that are important to them.” For example, 55.4 percent of 46,132 participants said they would attend more concerts if they could purchase tickets via mobile phones.
Notably, 68.6 percent of 50,464 respondents to one survey said they plan to buy a new mobile phone during the next 12 months, and 56.6 percent of them expect to purchase a phone with built-in camera functionality.
