TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. said it plans to expand the service area for its FOMA service to an additional 43 towns and villages in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region on June 14 and to 218 towns and nationwide by the end of the month. The carrier said the expansion will increase FOMA coverage to 98 percent of populated areas in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region and to 93 percent of Japan’s population.
As part of the expansion, DoCoMo said it will also expand the number of FOMA base stations nationwide from 6,300 at the end of March to 7,000 base stations by the end of June.
In addition to the network expansion, DoCoMo also will expand its World Wing FOMA international roaming service to five additional countries on June 16, bringing the services total coverage to 58 countries. The new countries include Brazil, Canada, China, Pakistan and Vietnam.
