CHICAGO-Wal-Mart Stores announced plans to implement a radio-frequency identification (RFID) compliance program that brings wireless inventory tracking to the retail industry. Wal-Mart said it will require its top 100 suppliers to use electronic tags on all cases and pallets of goods by January 2005.
The initiative is backed by the Uniform Code Council and Auto-ID Center. Zebra Technologies, which provides electronic product code-compliant RFID solutions said it welcomes the news. “Wal-Mart’s backing of this program will be the catalyst that drives consumer goods manufacturers, logistics providers and other retailers to establish RFID programs to begin developing the new business processes that deliver on the value of this technology.”
