Handspring Inc. followed up on promises to update its Treo mobile phone/personal digital assistant device with the release of its new Treo 600, which breaks from the PDA form factor to look more like a mobile phone.
The slimmed down Treo still features a full keyboard with bigger keys than the original Treo, but the keyboard has been squeezed into a smaller size. The new Treo’s screen is also smaller than the original Treo. It does not have a flip screen like the original Treo.
The device also features an integrated digital camera and will work over both GSM and CDMA networks.
Handspring, which was recently acquired by rival Palm Inc., will begin selling the device in the fall through a variety of carriers, including its close partners Sprint PCS and European carrier Orange. Pricing details were not released, although the company said the device will sell for about the same as the $300 Treo 300.
The new Treo 600 also features the Palm OS 5, an updated Web browser and an ARM processor.
