U.S. wireless directory assistance market could reach $3B

SAN FRANCISCO-Including wireless numbers in traditionally wireline-based directory assistance/enquiry (DA/DQ) databases, could create a $3 billion market for U.S. carriers and DA/DQ service providers within four years, according to new research from Zelos Group Inc.

“With only 2 percent of wireless subscribers in the database of publicly available listings, we’ve got a long way to go to critical mass,” said Kathleen Pierz, partner and senior analyst at Zelos Group and author o f the report. “We expect carriers or third-party service providers to be very creative to entice a majority of wireless subscribers to list their numbers, while protecting their privacy at the same time. These are not mutually exclusive ends.”

Pierz notes that several countries and regions in Europe have a critical mass of wireless numbers in their DA/DQ databases, most notably Scandinavia, where one out of five calls to DA/DQ are for wireless listings.
