TOKYO-Japanese operator KDDI Corp. and Okinawa Cellular Telephone plan to offer a new payment collection service where charges for purchases through participating online shopping sites are invoiced to end users with their monthly cellular bills. The service trial will begin July 3.
The service and the online sites will be part of KDDI’s EZ Web wireless Internet service. The operator said the service will allow its users to buy goods as easily as they buy ring tones and handset images by entering passwords. KDDI said the service will also include a new shopping portal and several new planned BREW applications.
Thirty-three companies will initially participate in the service.
In May, KDDI rival NTT DoCoMo Inc. launched an m-commerce initiative allowing mobile-phone users to visit DoCoMo’s online store using their phones and to pay for items using their Visa or JCB credit cards.
