CHICAGO-Demand for ubiquitous connectivity between mobile devices and access technologies, including wireless wide area networks and local area networks is growing, indicating roaming between these technologies will become a necessity, according to recent research from the International Engineering Consortium.
IEC suggests operators focus as much on WLAN implementations as they do on traditional cellular WWANs to create ubiquitous networks that can be used for various purposes. IEC believes, for example, that 2.5- and third-generation technologies will allow consumers to access data like e-mail, calendars, text messaging, and multimedia messaging service, while WLANs will be used to access corporate files and intranets.
