J-Phone hits 10M camera-phone sales

TOKYO-J-Phone Company Ltd. said yesterday that the number of users of its Sha-mail picture messaging handsets exceeded 10 million. The Japanese operator was the first in the country to launch a picture messaging service in November 2000 and has seen rapid uptake.

The company has more than 14 million total subscribers.

J-Phone rival NTT DoCoMo Inc. reached the 10 million picture messaging handset sales milestone at end-April, although it didn’t launch its i-shot camera-phone service until June 2002. However, DoCoMo has 44 million total subscribers.
