Nortel supplies gear for Cingular network migration

DALLAS-Nortel Networks Ltd. reported it is the primary provider of Home Location Register infrastructure for Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s ongoing migration to GSM/GPRS/EDGE technologies. Nortel said the HLR technology is designed to track and manage individual subscriber information that is needed for the network to confirm that callers are valid customers, to route calls and to provision services.

Nortel added that it provides wireless infrastructure for Cingular in a number of its legacy GSM markets and said it is currently upgrading radio and core networking equipment to support advanced GSM and GPRS data services, deploying a nationwide ATM backbone network and upgrading Cingular’s TDMA network in Puerto Rico to GSM technology.
