KINGSTON, Jamaica-Cable & Wireless Jamaica has become the first Cable & Wireless Caribbean operation to begin GPRS service, according to a statement from technology provider Nortel Networks Ltd. The operator is the first of 12 planned deployments of GPRS technology across the region.
The new services include mobile Web browsing, e-mail and multimedia applications. The network supplied by Nortel also offers increased voice capacity. The operator plans to launch similar services in the Cayman Islands, Barbados and other islands by the end of the third quarter.
Jamaica is one of Cable & Wireless’ most competitive mobile markets, with two other operators, Digicel and Ocean Digital Jamaica, also offering service. Digicel, which launched much later than Cable & Wireless, has more subscribers than the U.K.-based company.
