LONDON-The GSM Association said it welcomed the European Commission’s recent initiative to combat spamming. GSM Europe, the regional interest group, said the new EU provisions can help to limit the problem if transposed effectively and fairly.
“Most critical of all is the negative impact it has on customer relations, as discontented customers often blame their operator for the inconvenience of spam-SMS,” said Kaisu Karvala, chair of GSM Europe.
However, the group cautioned that the commission should clarify the new opt-in obligations and the rights of companies to market their own similar products and services. GSM Europe said it is working on a draft set of commendations on spamming in mobile networks.
Spamming legislation in the United States that includes mobile spamming is working its way through Congress.
