Smart card spec for hot spots released

PARIS-The WLAN Smart Card Consortium has released a smart card specification to allow hot-spot operators to use subscriber identity module technology for wireless local area network authentication. The specification will allow mobile operators to securely use existing roaming, billing and back-office infrastructure in WLAN initiatives.

“Because the specification is SIM-based, it allows operators to apply an accepted authentication model to a new market,” said Bertrand du Castel, pro-tempore president of the WLAN Smart Card Consortium.

The draft specification WLAN-SIM V0.1 is available for comments.
