HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.-Rugged handheld device maker Symbol Technologies Inc. said it purchased wireless enterprise company Covigo Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
The move is the latest in the wireless enterprise front, which has seen a significant amount of activity under the tightened economy.
Symbol said it will add Covigo’s technology to its Mobility Software Division, which is responsible for developing, marketing and delivering integrated device and network management products, systems management products and client-side infrastructure mobility services, such as security policy management, real-time location processing, voice support and automated data capture integration. Covigo’s mobile platform allows businesses to simplify the creation and deployment of wireless applications while reducing administrative costs associated with network management and data synchronization.
“The acquisition of Covigo is a key component of our strategy to develop and deliver enterprise mission-critical mobility solutions targeted at optimizing our customers’ business processes,” said Todd Hewlin, Symbol’s senior vice president for global products. “We intend to develop mobility solutions that can then be easily taken to market by our software and system integration partners to enable customers to increase productivity and provide better management and control of their mobile computing assets.”
Acquisitions have become standard in the wireless enterprise space, with Nokia Corp. purchasing Eizel Technologies. Other wireless enterprise players have not fared so well; GoAmerica Inc. recently announced it might shut down its wireless enterprise business.
