OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-Total wireless handsets shipped reached 107 million units in the second quarter, demonstrating 12-percent year-on-year growth and 2-percent sequential growth, according to research from ABI.
New features including color screens and camera phones likely fueled the growth. Replacement shipments accounted for 27 percent of all handsets shipped, according to the research firm.
Nokia Corp. held its lead with 38-percent market share, and more than one-third of its shipments included color screens. Motorola Inc.’s shipments, which accounted for 15-percent market share were down to 15.8 million, which ABI attributed to the company’s slow response to demand for replacement handsets with new features. Meanwhile, 45 percent of third-place Samsung Corp.’s handsets had color screens. ABI expects 97 percent of all handsets shipped by 2008 to include color screens.
Shipments from Siemens AG stayed flat at 8.1 million units, with the lowest average selling price of $130. And Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. shipped 6.7 million handsets, stealing fifth place from LG Electronics, even as its average selling price rose from $167 to $190 per handset.
