DoCoMo reports profit on cautious outlook

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. reported a net income of $1.65 billion in the first quarter ended June 30 in its first quarterly financial report.

DoCoMo said it had 600,000 FOMA subscribers in July, based on additional coverage and the release of dual-mode handsets that can access both current- and third-generation networks. The operator had 38.65 million i-mode subscribers at the end of June, and 12 million users now have camera-enabled handsets.

The company’s aggregate average revenue per user for its current-generation services was $67.60, while its FOMA aggregate ARPU totaled $80.84.

The operator previously reported only half-year and full-year results. In recent financial results, the company has taken hefty writeoffs for its overseas investments, although the company did not report foreign losses for the first quarter.

However, DoCoMo’s outlook remained cautious. “The environment surrounding our business is becoming harsher, with inter-exchange operators having been authorized to compete with mobile operators in setting charges for relay connection calls originating from landline networks and terminating on mobile networks,” said Keiji Tachikawa, president and chief executive officer of NTT DoCoMo. “Going forward, we will strive to adequately respond to the changes in the competitive environment and solidify our managerial foundation of further disseminating our FOMA service.”
