SAN DIEGO-Nokia Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. performed trials on what have been known to some degree as rival technologies for the respective companies, Nokia on CDMA2000 1x EV-DV and Qualcomm on UMTS.
Nokia said it placed what it described as the world’s first DV high-speed packet data phone call on its Nokia 2285 handset. The device was upgraded with a Nokia DV chipset and a Racal Instruments DV base station emulator, according to Nokia.
“In less than one year, Nokia has led the development of the 1x EV-DV specification from an approved standard to a functional handset that can be used for infrastructure lab interoperability testing and subsequently, operator field testing,” said Adam Gould, vice president of technology management and strategy for Nokia Mobile Phones.
Qualcomm said it performed successful field trials for UMTS technology in operators’ networks in Asia, Europe and North America, using the Mobile Station Modem 6200.
The field trial covered “W-CDMA circuit-switched data, packet-switched data, GPRS data, and W-CDMA (UMTS) and GSM voice-both in the multiple W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS frequency bands and on the multiple networks supported by a majority of the worldwide infrastructure providers,” according to Qualcomm.
