Dear Editor,
In response to Tracy Ford’s opinion piece on interference:
In regards to the statement referring to the Consensus Plan as being controversial (no disagreement here!) that “there is not much consensus behind the plan.” I respectfully take issue. The fact that public-safety and private wireless interests along with Nextel Communications Inc. have come up with a plan that has been overwhelmingly approved by the leadership of more than a dozen diverse organizations representing a very sizable slice of 800 MHz spectrum is nothing short of remarkable. And as with any consensus plan, there is always give and take-with no one getting everything they would like. AMTA has always felt that the driving force behind the plan was solving RF interference where we know it to occur and to do so before another tragedy can occur. We stand by this plan simply because public safety stands behind the plan. And while everyone would prefer a technical fix that solves the problem proactively as opposed to reactively (a very key distinction) we have yet to see such a workable solution to date. Complex problems often require complex solutions!
