RIM says 2Q results to exceed expectations

Research In Motion reported that its preliminary second-quarter results exceed its stated revenue and earnings growth expectations.

RIM said it expects revenue for the second quarter to be in the $123 million to $126 million range, exceeding forecasts of $105 million to $115 million. The company said it expects net income for the second quarter to also exceed forecasts and come in at a range of 2 cents to 5 cents per share.

Excluding the patent litigation provision, RIM said it expects adjusted diluted earnings to be between 7 cents and 11 centers per share.

New Blackberry subscribers in the quarter number between 94,000 and 97,000, bringing the total customer base to more than 700,000.

RIM will report final second-quarter results Sept. 25.

The company also announced support for the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension e-mail security standard for its Java-based devices. S/MIME offers an additional layer of security between the sender and recipient of an e-mail message using advanced encryption and digital signatures and will be offered to RIM’s government and corporate customers.

“S/MIME support is an important purchasing requirement of many of our customers including the U.S. Department of Defense,” said Don Morrison, RIM chief operating officer.
