HELSINKI, Finland-The Open Base Station Architecture Initiative has released its first specification for base stations, which is aimed at reducing development effort and costs.
OBSAI is at odds with another initiative known as the Common Public Radio Interface led by L.M. Ericsson. Nokia leads OBSAI. Each initiative claims to be open.
“The key challenges facing mobile telecommunications service providers are the high complexity and cost of infrastructure investment required to provide sufficient capacity for advanced mobile services and subsequently to bring these services to market,” said Jukka Klemettila, chairperson of OBSAI.
The Dell’Oro Group projects $20.2 billion in revenue for the base station market by 2005 and $21.6 billion in 2006.
