LA JOLLA, Calif.-Openwave Systems Inc. announced its Phone Suite Version 7 (V7) product for mobile phones will now work over the Linux-based operating system, a move the company said is a nod toward the growing market for Linux-based phones.
“Handset user experiences available today lag the capabilities of most phone hardware,” said Thomas Reardon, vice president and general manager of Openwave’s client software group. “Bringing our V7 graphics technology and applications to Linux closes that gap by opening innovation and freeing manufacturers to compete in this consumer electronics business on their economic and technological terms, not on the terms of their suppliers.”
Openwave did not disclose V7 Linux licensees, but said the first phone running Linux and using the V7 software will be available in the first half of next year.
