GUATEMALA CITY-Guatemalan mobile operator SERCOM has selected Nortel Networks Ltd. to deploy a nationwide GSM network. Nortel will overlay SERCOM’s current CDMA2000 1X network, also supplied by Nortel, with the GSM technology.
Nortel said the new network will also be GPRS and EDGE ready. The supplier did not disclose the value of the contract.
SERCOM is the wireless division of Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala, which is owned by America Movil.
“We wanted the enhanced roaming capability of a GSM network .” said Marvin Par, SERCOM general director.
