Nokia signs $23M contract in Thailand

HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. signed a $23 million agreement with Thai mobile operator AIS to expand its GSM/GPRS network and roll out EDGE networks in the northern, central and southern regions of the country.

Nokia said the deal covers the immediate delivery of equipment and services required for AIS’ increasing GSM/GPRS traffic and the activation of EDGE in non-voice strategic cities such as Chiangmai and Phuket.

The agreement also includes project management, implementation and network maintenance services.

The Nokia announcement follows a deal between AIS and L.M. Ericsson announced last week. L.M. Ericsson said it signed a $10 million agreement to be the sole supplier of GSM equipment for AIS in the metropolitan area.

“The agreement with AIS covers the core and radio access network expansions, including the EDGE live network with a selected group of users,” said the Swedish vendor last week, adding that it will provide EDGE integration and bring value-added services to its customer.
