SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Japanese wireless giant NTT DoCoMo Inc. said it plans to develop software for mobile phone to protect from wireless viruses, including multimedia-style bugs that travel through e-mail.
DoCoMo is working with virus protection company Network Associates Inc. to develop a compact anti-virus engine. The companies said they have been working on the technology since May 2002 and plan to install the software into DoCoMo phones by the end of next year. The companies also said they may offer the technology to standards organizations.
The deal is notable as the wireless industry further evolves to Internet and data technologies. DoCoMo has largely been at the forefront of the anti-virus and anti-spam movements, and other network operators have embraced many of the carrier’s innovations.
