NICE, France-Nokia made numerous announcements today at its annual customer Mobile Internet Conference in Nice, France, and at its “Destination Nokia 100% Pure Mobility” event in Brisbane, Australia.
The company shared its vision of a mobile services mass market to a broad range of industry players, including mobile operators, application developers, content and service providers, media, information technology companies, retailers and enterprises. Also unveiled at the annual conference were five new mobile devices, including the Nokia 7700 media device, mobile enhancements, and network products and solutions.
- The Nokia 7700 provides users with a mobile Internet and personal media experience. The Nokia 7700 Symbian-based media device enables users to view Web pages with a full Internet browser over high-speed mobile networks on a 65,000 color touch screen optimized for viewing Internet content. Additional features include music and video playback and streaming, an integrated VGA camera, FM radio, multimedia messaging support, as well as a full complement of personal information management features. The Nokia 7700 media device works on GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 networks, with shipments in Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific expected to begin in the second quarter of 2004.
- Nokia launched two new products that enable GSM/GPRS operators to offer push-to-talk service. The Nokia push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) solution allows operators to use their existing GSM/GPRS networks to provide instant voice service over GSM networks. The Nokia Push to Talk Call Processor handles PoC traffic, while the Nokia Push to Talk Register handles PoC subscriber data. The two PoC products can be connected to existing multi-vendor GPRS networks. The company said commercial deliveries will start in the first quarter 2004.
- Nokia also said it has concluded close to 10 deals for the Nokia Intelligent Content Delivery solution with customers in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas. The Nokia Intelligent Content Delivery solution allows operators to deliver different types of mobile content wirelessly from a variety of sources, enabling differentiated charging, online prepaid and postpaid charging, and enhanced ease of use, said the company.
- The company introduced the Nokia 6230 phone. The tri-band (GSM, GPRS, EDGE 900/1800/1900, GSM, GPRS, EDGE 850/1800/1900) mobile phone offers multiple connectivity options via EDGE and Bluetooth wireless technology, a removable multimedia memory card as well as an integrated VGA camera to capture pictures and videos. The Nokia 6230 is expected to start shipping in Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Americas in the first quarter of 2004.
- Following the announcement of a new User Interface called Series 90, Nokia released its Developer Platform 2.0 for Series 90. The company said Developer Platform for Series 90 is a complete and feature-rich development platform providing an environment for media consumption, mobile services and a true Internet experience. The first device based on Developer Platform for Series 90 is the Nokia 7700.
- Nokia Wireless Accelerator is designed to efficiently optimize data communication over narrowband wireless and fixed networks, which the company said improves the overall user experience and saves costs. Nokia Wireless Accelerator enhances the end-user experience by securely and efficiently downloading enterprise data to wireless devices or laptops.
- The company said it began shipping the Java-based application for its Exec Connect enhancement to the Nokia One Mobile Connectivity Service. The new feature will enable mobile workers using Java-based devices with the Exec Connect enhancement to manage corporate and personal information while away from the office. The Java version of Exec Connect is the first of three versions to ship; an Exec Connect application for Symbian-based devices and an XHTML version are expected later this year.
- Nokia also announced that its end-to-end enterprise security solution for phones using the Symbian operating system is now available for Series 60-based devices, such as the Nokia 3650 and the Nokia 7650 mobile phones.
