WASHINGTON-With just over three weeks before the scheduled implementation of wireless local number portability, the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association released a number of consumer tips that it said would help smooth the porting process.
The recommendations include not canceling your old service before visiting the retail outlet of the carrier you wish to port to; bringing a copy of your last bill from your current carrier or exact details of the account, including your name as it appears on the bill, billing address, account number and current phone number; reviewing terms of your current contract to make sure you are not subject to an early termination fee; allowing plenty of time at the retail store to fill out necessary paper work; and being aware that the authorization signature required to port a number must be from the same person who signed up for the original service.
A number of carriers have recently released similar lists as part of their WLNP consumer education initiatives.
