SAO PAULO, Brazil-Motorola Inc. said it has won a contract to supply base stations and transmission equipment for Brazilian carrier Vivo’s CDMA2000 1x network in the northern and western parts of the country.
The contract signals the first phase of Vivo’s migration from TDMA to CDMA2000 1x technology.
“The new network will allow Vivo to offer high-speed data services, as well as giving subscribers from other states digital roaming capability in the northern and center-west Vivo coverage area, increasing the carrier’s service quality,” said Jose Figueroa, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola Global Telecom Solutions sector for Latin America and Caribbean region.
Earlier this week, Nortel Networks Ltd. said it signed a 1x network contract with Vivo as well. Neither vendor supplied the values of the contracts.
Vivo is a joint venture of Portugal Telecom and Telefonica Moviles and is Brazil’s largest operator with more than 17 million customers and nearly 48-percent market share in the country.
