DSP shipments enjoy strong growth

TEMPE, Ariz.-The market for digital signal processors is enjoying a continuing boost, according to a bulletin from electronics market research firm Forward Concepts. Citing figures from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, it describes DSP as a clear winner over “monolithic IC” (integrated circuit).

WSTS said the first three quarters of this year saw increased DSP shipments of 13.6 percent over the same period last year. IC had only 2.3 percent.

“After reviewing the Q4 (fourth quarter) market guidance of market leader Texas Instruments and increased projections of cellular phone shipments by the financial community, we have increased our earlier 15-percent shipment growth to 20 percent for 2003,” said Forward Concepts.

The research firm noted that the Far East is gaining momentum and taking market share away from the Americas and Europe. The main players are Korea and China in the Asia Pacific, which has a 41.5-percent share, a 19.9-percent leap. Japan has 12.8-percent market share, springing from a negative position with a 24.3-percent jump.

The report said wireless accounts for 67.7 percent of the DSP shipments.
