BANGKOK, Thailand-Continuing its push to expand its CDMA business, Nokia Corp. said it will sell a dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 CDMA handset starting next year. The company said the phone will serve to advance CDMA networks to the more flexible IPv6 network standard.
“Nokia recognizes the pressing need for IPv6 technology in advanced mobile devices and networks and is leading the industry in making it a reality,” said Adam Gould, vice president of technology management and strategy for Nokia’s CDMA business unit. “Our work in both the 3GPP and the 3GPP2 will shape the mobile Internet and help ensure the successful adoption of advanced wireless applications in the future.”
Nokia said IPv6 is the long-term solution for the issue of limited IPv4 addresses. Nokia said IPv6 also includes packet encryption and source authentications for end-to-end security protection, and a flow label to support real-time traffic.
Also during the eighth annual CDMA Development Group’s 3G World Congress, Nokia demonstrated a live video stream over a CDMA2000 1xEV-DV network.
The moves come as Nokia has worked to expand its CDMA handset business. And it seems the company’s efforts are working; Nokia said it doubled its CDMA market share into the mid-teens in its most recent quarter.
