OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Sprint Corp. reported a multi-million dollar agreement with Truckstop.net to provide Wi-Fi services to approximately 3,000 truck stops across the country. The agreement also includes other Internet Protocol services that Sprint said could eventually include as many as 11,000 Wi-Fi locations through various roaming agreements with Truckstop.net.
“There are more than 4.5 million truckers on the road in North America, and 25 percent have laptops,” said Mark Griffin, president of Rip Griffin Truck and Travel Centers, which has already installed 17 Wi-Fi networks through the Sprint and Truckstop.net agreement. “It’s an old industry, but it is ready for a new idea.”
Sprint announced its PCS Wi-Fi Access initiative earlier this year, including launching thousands of Wi-Fi access points by early 2004.
