Cingular formally launches LG GSM phones

As first reported by RCR Wireless News Oct. 14, LG Electronics formally announced today its first GSM phones for the U.S. market, devices it will sell through Cingular Wireless.

“Cingular offers the widest variety of innovative and stylish phones that support our newest services, including games, graphics, multimedia messaging and polyphonic ring tones,” said Frank Boyer, Cingular’s senior vice president of supply chain. “LG Mobile Phones’ new GSM handset line provides our customers with even more choices in finding wireless solutions that fit them best.”

Cingular will sell LG’s clamshell G4050, which features a color screen and an optional attachable camera accessory, for $150 with a two-year service agreement. LG’s G4010 features support for downloadable pictures, ring tones and games and will sell for $30 with a two-year agreement.

The move is notable as LG looks to expand its GSM business. The company this quarter managed to wrest the No. 5 worldwide mobile-phone maker slot away from Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.
