Qualcomm enters streaming video game

SAN DIEGO-Technology giant Qualcomm Inc. announced it will sell streaming video technology to handset makers, and heavy hitters such as Kyocera Wireless Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Sanyo Corp. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Japan Inc. have licensed the technology for future mobile phones.

Qualcomm’s move could put additional pressure on streaming video companies like RealNetworks Inc. and Emblaze Systems Ltd. Qualcomm’s offering is based on technology from PacketVideo Corp.

Qualcomm said the video products are part of its Launchpad offering, which covers a variety of wireless data products.

Qualcomm’s video products include its Qtv, a real-time decoder that enables the streaming and downloading of video content; Qcamcorder, a real-time encoder that records video; and Qvideophone, a two-way, video telephony solution that enables mobile videoconferencing. Qualcomm said the products are based on 3GPP/3GPP2, MPEG-4/H.263 software standards.
