Churn away, but please recycle!

OCALA, Fla.-Switching carriers will mean switching phones, potentially leaving millions of cell phones in the trash following the implementation of wireless local number portability. Several companies are working to maximize the value of those discarded phones.

RMS Communications Group Inc., for example, allows consumers to sell back their unwanted phones via its CellForCash.com Web site. The company has launched a new campaign in conjunction with wireless local number portability to bring attention to its program.

“We anticipate a substantial increase in activity following the Nov. 24 deadline since consumers don’t have many profitable and environmentally friendly options for disposing of their old cell phones,” said James Mosieur, chief executive officer of RMS.

Reliable Communications has launched another Web site-www.keepyourphonenumber.com-that offers information on porting phone numbers as well as two options for recycling phones. Reliable has a wireless buyback program that offers users cash for their used phones, and also touts a Wireless Charity program through which proceeds from used phones are donated to charities.
