Siemens negotiating with U.S. carrier on music download service

MUNICH, Germany-Device maker Siemens announced a new music downloading device and service that it will sell to wireless carriers, following MmO2’s introduction of the offering last week. Siemens said it is in advanced negotiations with an unnamed U.S. wireless carrier for the offering.

O2 last week introduced its new O2 Music service, which works through Siemens’ new DRM Music Player. The device connects to a mobile phone through infrared or a cable and allows users to download MP3 songs wirelessly from their phone into the DRM Music Player. Siemens said the device features advanced digital rights management and copyright protection through technology from SDC AG, prohibiting users from downloading or copying pirated songs.

Further, Siemens is selling the device as a white label product, allowing mobile operators to brand the device as their own, as O2 has done. Siemens is also selling a music downloading service along with the device. The company said it is in negotiations with several wireless carriers, including U.S. carriers, around the world to sell the device.

In other device news, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. said it is selling the new Treo 600 device for about $500 with a service plan. Good Technology Inc. is selling its Treo 600 wireless e-mail product working over the AWS network.

Finally, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced it is selling its new SGH-e715 camera phone through T-Mobile USA Inc. for $250 with a rebate.
