TORONTO-Roadpost Inc., which provides global voice and data communications solutions for business travelers, unveiled the Thuraya handset and service that the company said includes a dual-mode mobile telephone combining both satellite and GSM capabilities into one package.
Roadpost said the $795 handset can operate in either satellite or cellular mode depending on location and offers voice, data, fax and short messaging services. The handset also offers a GPS-enabled data kit software for use in remote location applications.
Roadpost added that the Thuraya service provides a 45-percent saving on hardware, subscription and activation fees, a U.K.-based number to reduce the cost of satellite calls from North America by as much as 69 percent over other satellite rates, and users can save an additional 44 percent on airtime by purchasing one of the company’s rental bundles.
“Thuraya is the perfect complement to our international cellular and satellite services by filling an important niche demand,” said Morris Shawn, president and chief executive officer of Roadpost.
