Wireless adult content to be big business

BASINGSTOKE, United Kingdom-New research shows the market for wireless gambling and adult content will be significant, but warns that wireless carriers will need to carefully toe the line in offering such content to protect their brand.

“A high demand from mobile users for adult content, and simple lottery-type gambling services, is almost without doubt,” said Paul Skeldon, senior analyst at Juniper Research. “The big issue now facing the sector is regulation and its implementation across the world. Our assessment is that the services that are given a green light will generate good revenues in certain regions, but these will be limited. Regulated lotteries and betting services will be the big winners.”

Juniper Research forecasts the worldwide market for gambling and adult-based content could grow to $6.5 billion by 2006, but warns that the market must consider safety, security and child protection. The firm said also that trustworthy and reliable payment systems must be in place, and carriers must protect users against unwanted spam.

The firm found adult content will generate around $790 million in revenues by 2006, largely driven by video services.
