RESTON, Va.-Wireless industry pioneer Craig McCaw resigned his seat on Nextel Communications Inc.’s board of directors in order to focus on pursuing new opportunities in the telecommunication arena and to make room for the addition of independent directors to the board.
“The actions of the current board of management, especially during the past year and a half, have helped position the company to succeed-financially, technologically and in every other significant measure,” said McCaw. “I leave with confidence that Nextel will continue to provide innovative, differentiated services and sustain its status as the best- performing mobile services company.”
McCaw originally garnered his seat on Nextel’s board in 1995 when his company Digital Radio invested more than $1 billion in the fledgling wireless provider. McCaw sold off much of his stake in Nextel earlier this year, losing the right to three board seats.
“I personally appreciate all that Craig has contributed to Nextel’s success during his eight years on our board,” added Tim Donahue, Nextel president and chief executive officer. “He will always be part of the Nextel family.”
