SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Intel Corp. said it has brought its wireless operations under a larger group known as the Intel Communications Group.
With this announcement, the Wireless Communications and Computing Group will be incorporated into the ICG. The WCCG covered wireless client space like processors based on Intel XScale technology, as well as chipsets, reference designs and software.
ICG will add these responsibilities to its current focus, which includes network processors, wireless local area network chipsets, gigabit-networking solutions, network cards and related infrastructure. Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of ICG, will head the combined organization.
Ron Smith, who is Intel senior vice president and general manager of WCCG, will retire early next year, said the company.
“We continue to drive the convergence of computing and communications through our product line-up, and with this we see wireless local area networking and wide area cellular technologies coming together,” said Intel Chief Executive Officer Craig Barrett. “Consolidation gives us better product planning and customer focus in these strategically critical areas going forward.”
