DUBLIN, Ireland-O2 Ireland said it began limited third-generation services in Ireland, equipping 25 customers with Nokia 6650 handsets. O2 Ireland said its 3G network coverage extends to more than 35 percent of the population and covers major urban centers, exceeding its regulatory requirements.
The operator said its 3G customers include selected businesses and individuals..
“Our intention is to introduce the service on a more widespread basis later in 2004 once the issue of handset availability is overcome,” said Danuta Gray, chief executive officer of O2 Ireland.
Several European operators have blamed their delayed 3G launches and slow user uptake on a lack of 3G handsets. The company said its plan to bring mass-market 3G services to Ireland in the second part of 2004 and 2005 is dependent on the availability of an adequate supply of competitively priced handsets with sufficient battery life.
The carrier is the only Irish operator offering 3G services. O2 Germany began 3G trails last month, and MmO2 also offers full commercial 3G services on the Isle of Man through its Manx Telecom subsidiary.
