SingTel delays 3G trial on handset issues

SINGAPORE-Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. has joined other operators around the world in blaming a lack of available third-generation handsets for its 3G rollout delay. The Singapore operator said it postponed consumer trials of 3G services due to handset issues, according to international press reports.

Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. blamed its Hong Kong 3G rollout delay and the slow uptake of W-CDMA services in its European markets on handset shortages.

Another Hong Kong operator, SmarTone Telecommunications, said it plans to launch 3G operations in the second half of the year.
