Alcatel nets contracts in China, Cyprus, Canada

PARIS-Alcatel Corp. said it signed a $14 million GSM expansion contract with Gansu Mobile Communication Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of China Mobile.

Under the project, which is expected to be completed in June, Alcatel will supply GSM/GPRS/EDGE solutions including new software. The operator will be able to improve network performance reliability and serve up to 2.5 million subscribers through the project, Alcatel said.

Alcatel will also provide 20,000 GSM wireless business phones to help Gansu MCC develop a public phone business in rural areas where fixed lines are not available.

Alcatel also said it signed a contract to supply a GSM/GPRS EDGE network to Investcom in Cyprus. The system will be operational May 1 by Scancom, Investcom’s mobile arm. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Alcatel will supply Scancom with its Evolium radio and mobile core network, along with an intelligent network platform for value-added services and revenue-generating applications.

In addition, the French vendor said it won a multimillion-dollar contract to supply Bell Mobility with its Intelligent Network platform and prepaid cellular services. Under the contract terms, Alcatel will deploy its 8690 Open Services Platform and the Alcatel payment suite, which includes the 8618 rating engine and the Alcatel 8610 prepaid application.

“By offering solutions that address the complete spectrum of mobile voice and data services, Alcatel has the ability to adapt to the end user’s communication needs-anywhere, anytime and from any device,” said Hubert de Pesquidoux, chief executive officer of Alcatel Canada.
