SEOUL, South Korea-Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said it signed an agreement with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. to add BlackBerry capability to its mobile phones.
Samsung is the latest in a line of major licensing deals for RIM. Nokia Corp., Sony Ericsson and others have signed up for RIM’s BlackBerry Connect licensing program. However, Nokia delayed plans to release a BlackBerry-capable device in the United States due to RIM’s legal battles with NTP Inc. Nokia is selling its BlackBerry-capable device outside the United States.
“We are excited to work with RIM to integrate BlackBerry wireless data connectivity with Samsung wireless handhelds,” said H. Woo Kim, vice president of new business development with Samsung. “We are committed to providing our business customers with the best available solutions to meet their wireless data needs and we believe BlackBerry connectivity will be a popular choice with our customers.”
In other Samsung news, the company licensed a new 3D graphics application processor from semiconductor technology company ARM. The technology will allow Samsung to offer various 3D applications in its mobile phones.
