CANNES, France-Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. and others led the charge on the mobile phone front, introducing a range of wireless devices from the most advanced to the most unique.
First, Motorola introduced new devices running on Microsoft Corp.’s operating system aimed at the business market, as well as advanced third-generation devices aimed at consumers. RCR Wireless News reported on Motorola’s planned releases last Friday.
Motorola introduced two new advanced phones running Microsoft’s Smartphone operating system. The company said the advanced phones would be available in the second half of this year. Motorola’s three new 3G devices-including one device using the Symbian operating system-will be available later this year.
In other device news:
- Panasonic introduced its new X700 smart phone running on Nokia Corp.’s Series 60 user interface, which is based on the Symbian operating system. The advanced clamshell phone features an integrated digital camera, support for miniSD memory cards and Bluetooth. Panasonic said it will be available across Europe in autumn.
- Samsung introduced its new PMG Sleek Module, which is based on technology from startup IXI Mobile. IXI’s technology, which is for sale to mobile phone makers, essentially connects a variety of Bluetooth devices to one wide area wireless device. IXI has promised to commercially offer several devices in Europe and the United States by the middle of this year.
- AlphaCell Wireless, an Emblaze Group company, introduced its new M5 Music mobile phone, which the company said supports MP3 music files and MMC SD memory cards. The company said the phone is targeted at the youth market.
Finally, not to be left out, Siemens promised it will introduce 30 new handsets this year, as well as a device that will allow wireline phone users to send picture messages.
