ABI predicts Wi-Fi industry growth

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-The Wi-Fi industry will continue to grow, driven by new equipment and innovative applications, according to a new report by Allied Business Intelligence.

The firm predicted 95 million Wi-Fi networking equipment devices will be shipped in 2009. ABI also predicted 802.11g will surpass 802.11b as the most popular protocol this year due to consumers choosing products with faster speeds. In 2005, there will be more 802.11a/g shipments than 802.11g shipments, said ABI.

“Advances in production technology have enabled Wi-Fi IC vendors to reduce the costs of producing these chips,” said Phil Solis, senior analyst at ABI. “ASPs for 802.11a/g ICs will naturally remain higher than that of 802.11g, but that gap will narrow over time.”

The findings are part of ABI’s Wi-Fi Quarterly Service, which provides data on hot-spot deployments, integrated circuits, network equipment and other key market drivers.
