TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. announced one of its newly released FOMA third-generation mobile phones has a software glitch that could mix up incoming e-mails. The carrier said it will offer a software patch in the next few days to fix the problem.
The event is notable as DoCoMo recently announced intentions to offer over-the-air repair technology that would allow the carrier to essentially push software patches directly to users’ phones, thus eliminating the need for users to manually fix the glitches themselves. A variety of other companies, including Motorola Inc., Siemens and SK Telecom, have announced plans to introduce similar technology.
DoCoMo said the software patch for its FOMA F900i mobile phone will be available for download starting March 6. The carrier said users will be immediately notified of details via DoCoMo’s Web site and i-mode portal site. DoCoMo also said technical support staff will work with customers who would like to have the software updated directly at a DoCoMo shop location. The carrier was not immediately available to comment on its OTA updating technology and whether it would be applicable in this situation.
