CTIA, TracFone partner to help domestic violence victims

ATLANTA-CTIA’s Wireless Foundation will partner with prepaid wireless service provider TracFone Wireless to distribute wireless phones to domestic violence victims. The phones and associated airtime will be donated to domestic violence shelters as part of the Foundation’s Call to Protect program, which has provided more than 33,000 phones to similar agencies since 1996.

According to the Foundation, since 1999, consumers have donated more than 2 million used wireless phones to help fund charitable causes.

All phones donated through Call to Protect have working numbers, allowing properly equipped public safety call centers to re-connect with a caller if the call is disconnected. Pilot testing is under way, and the Foundation expects to ship the TracFones to shelters during the next several months.
