PRAGUE-Nortel Networks has been chosen to supply Czech Republic-based wireless service provider Eurotel Praha with a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network that will operate in the 450 MHz radio spectrum.
The network will allow Eurotel to introduce broadband Internet and other advanced services like wireless e-mail and rich multimedia access. For the project, Nortel will provide its CDMA 450 architecture, in addition to services including engineering, installation, maintenance and optimization.
Nortel’s CDMA 450 solution is built on its new Compact Metro Cell CDMA Base Transceiver Station, which is being demonstrated at this week’s CTIA Wireless 2004 show in Atlanta. The solution supports CDMAOne, CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in the same shelf. It features “pay as you grow” flexibility and a modular design, capable of supporting up to nine carriers in the same footprint. “Compact Metro Cell will ensure maximum investment protection, and will allow operators to swiftly roll out revenue-generating 3G services,” said Steve Searles, vice president of marketing for CDMA/TDMA at Nortel.
Separately, Nortel announced Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc. will use Nortel’s CDMA core and access technology to launch a commercially available 3G wireless data network in Alaska. Nortel will provide radio, switching and core infrastructure equipment for the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, which is expected to commercially launch this May.
