SAN JOSE, Calif.-Cisco Systems Inc. said it has unveiled its transportation solutions program for enterprise and consumers for deployments at airports, roadways, public transportation and seaports worldwide. It is a mixture of wireless and wired offering integrating voice, data and video.
Already, the Toronto Pearson International Airport is showcasing the program, called Cisco Intelligent Airport solutions.
“To keep up with changing needs and to avoid becoming operationally impaired, transportation organizations must migrate from multiple, disparate communications environments to a single, intelligent network that will serve as a foundation for applications and communications,’ said Pierre-Paul Allard, vice president, enterprise marketing, Cisco Systems.
The wireless dimension covers networking, Internet access, applications and security, according to Cisco. At the airport, wireless technology will enable passenger check-in, ticketing and airport information services via service counters, kiosks and remote access sites “to improve passenger flow and space utilization.”
At the Toronto airport, the solution will converge 14 separate networks and 11 information silos into a single, more secure network at the new terminal, according to Cisco.
Other than Toronto, Cisco already has customers in the Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Munich International, Athens International Airport, South African Airports and Sydney Airport Corp. Ltd.
The railway customers include the California Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Beaufort County South Carolina Department of Transportation. Its public transportation customers include Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit, Paris Transport Company and Deutsche Bahn Rail AG.
